Büchner Funnel

A Büchner funnel is a laboratory filtration device used to separate a solid from a liquid efficiently, making it a fundamental tool in chemistry. It holds filter paper on a perforated plate and connects to a side-arm flask; when a vacuum lowers the pressure beneath the funnel, atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid through the paper while the solid remains as a residue. Chemists use this vacuum filtration method to collect precipitates, wash crystalline products, and accelerate drying compared with gravity filtration. The technique supports purification, yield assessment, and routine solid-liquid separations in teaching and research laboratories.
