Photocatalytic Activity

Photocatalytic activity is the ability of a material to use light energy to accelerate a chemical reaction without being consumed, making it important for studying reaction pathways and designing sustainable chemical processes. When the material absorbs photons with sufficient energy, it generates excited electrons and positively charged holes that migrate to its surface, where they drive oxidation and reduction reactions involving adsorbed molecules. In chemistry, photocatalytic activity is evaluated through reaction rates, product formation, and catalyst stability, and it supports applications such as pollutant degradation, selective synthesis, water treatment, and solar-fuel production. Understanding these processes helps researchers optimize catalyst composition, surface structure, and illumination conditions.
