Counterfeit Product Identification

Counterfeit product identification is the analytical process of determining whether a product is genuine by comparing its composition, structure, and physical characteristics with those of an authenticated product. In chemistry, analysts examine chemical fingerprints using methods such as spectroscopy, chromatography, and elemental analysis, which can reveal unexpected ingredients, altered formulations, impurities, or differences in manufacturing materials. These measurements may be combined with reference standards, statistical comparison, and packaging or sample testing to distinguish authentic products from imitations. The approach supports quality control and regulatory investigations across pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, and consumer goods, helping protect public safety, verify supply chains, and identify sources of fraudulent manufacturing.

University of Notre Dame, IN A fundamental requirement of biomedical research is the proper identification of research animals. It is essential that the right animal is utilized for procedures and data collection. Laboratory mice and rats can be identified with the following permanent methods: ear tags, ear punch codes, microchip implantation, tail tattoos for adult mice, and toe tattoos for neonates. Temporary methods of...
