Planar Conformers

Planar conformers are molecular conformations in which the relevant atoms lie approximately in a single plane, a geometry that can strongly influence molecular reactivity and properties. They form when conjugation, ring constraints, steric effects, or other electronic interactions favor a restricted arrangement of bonds and limit rotation around single bonds. In chemistry, comparing planar conformers with nonplanar alternatives helps explain differences in stability, electron delocalization, dipole moment, and spectroscopic behavior. Their structures can be evaluated using molecular modeling, diffraction methods, and spectroscopy, supporting the interpretation of reaction mechanisms and the design of organic molecules with predictable shape and function.

Conformity

2020

Conformity is the change in a person’s behavior to go along with the group, even if that person does not agree with the group. Asch’s Original Study Solomon Asch conducted several experiments in the 1950s to determine how people are affected by the thoughts and behaviors of other people. In one study, a group of participants was shown a series of printed line segments of different lengths: a, b, and c. Participants were then shown a fourth line segment: x. They were asked to identify which...

A Minority of One: Conformity to Group Norms

2023

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University It is obvious that we are influenced by those around us, but in the early to mid 1900's, psychologists began to study how potent social influence can be on our thoughts and behaviors. Motivated in part by attempts to explain the behaviors of Nazi soldiers in World War II, one topic of considerable interest at the time in psychology was conformity, the phenomenon in which people match their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs to group...

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes

2020

Tetrahedral Complexes Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...

Spatial Separation of Molecular Conformers and Clusters

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.
