Polymerized Emulsion

Polymerized emulsion is a colloidal dispersion in which monomers are converted into polymer particles within a continuous liquid phase, typically water, producing a stable latex. In emulsion polymerization, surfactants disperse hydrophobic monomers into micelles or droplets, while an initiator generates reactive radicals that start chain growth and form polymer particles; agitation, temperature, and reagent concentrations control particle size and molecular properties. These emulsions provide an efficient route to water-based polymers used in paints, coatings, adhesives, synthetic rubber, and textile treatments. Their low-solvent processing and tunable properties make them important in industrial polymer chemistry and materials design.

Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.

Preparing an Antigen-Adjuvant Emulsion to Induce Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

2025

This video demonstrates an efficient homogenization technique to generate an antigen-adjuvant emulsion to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in a murine model. The emulsion contains an autoantigen — myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) — in the water phase, surrounded by a continuous oil phase comprising an inactivated pathogenic bacteria. The emulsion ensures a sustained release of antigens for a prolonged immune response.

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

Assembly of Porous Monolithic Materials Using a Pickering Emulsion Strategy Stabilized by Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) Particles

2026

This study successfully uses MIL-96(Al) Metal-Organic Frameworks particles to stabilize Pickering emulsions, which serve as templates to form mechanically robust, hierarchically porous monolithic materials. This method allows scalable MOF shaping while preserving crystal integrity. Tuning formulation is key to controlling pore size, interconnectivity, permeability, and robustness.
