Proton Donor

A proton donor is a chemical species that transfers a hydrogen ion (H⁺) to another species, making it a Brønsted–Lowry acid and central to acid–base chemistry. During an acid–base reaction, the donor forms a new bond to a proton acceptor as its own X–H bond breaks, producing the donor’s conjugate base; the relative strengths of these partners influence reaction direction and equilibrium. Proton donors help explain pH, neutralization, conjugate acid–base pairs, and buffer action, and they are important in analytical chemistry, biological systems, and reaction mechanisms involving proton transfer.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.

Source: Alexander S. Gold1, Tonya M. Colpitts1 1 Department of Microbiology, Boston University School of Medicine, National Emerging Infections Diseases Laboratories, Boston, MA First discovered by Lederberg and Tatum in 1946, conjugation is a form of horizontal gene transfer between bacteria that relies on direct physical contact between two bacterial cells (1). Unlike other forms of gene transfer, such as transformation or transduction, conjugation is a naturally occurring process in which...
