Reversible Reaction

A reversible reaction is a chemical process in which reactants form products while products can simultaneously convert back into reactants, allowing the system to move in both directions. As the forward and reverse reactions proceed, their rates change until they become equal at dynamic equilibrium, where concentrations remain constant even though molecular transformations continue. Changes in concentration, temperature, or pressure can shift the equilibrium position, often described by Le Chatelier’s principle. Understanding reversible reactions helps explain acid-base equilibria, solubility, gas-phase reactions, and industrial processes such as ammonia production, while providing a foundation for predicting reaction outcomes and optimizing chemical yields.

Reversible or Opposing Reactions

2026

Reversible or opposing reactions play a crucial role in understanding the dynamic nature of chemical processes. While kinetics focuses on how reactions proceed, thermodynamics emphasizes that most reactions do not reach completion. Instead, a reverse reaction starts occurring over time, and when its rate equals that of the forward reaction, a dynamic equilibrium is established. For example, consider a simple chemical process where A forms B reversibly. The rate constants for the forward and...

Types of Chemical Reactions: Exchange and Reversible

2023

An exchange reaction is a chemical reaction in which both synthesis and decomposition occur, chemical bonds are both formed and broken, and chemical energy is absorbed, stored, and released. A special kind of exchange reaction is the oxidation-reduction reaction, or the redox reaction. These reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one compound to another. The electrons in these reactions commonly come from hydrogen atoms, which consist of an electron and a proton. A molecule gives up a...

We describe a novel method for increasing cDNA yield from single-cell quantities of mRNA in otherwise standard laboratory reverse transcription reactions. The novelty resides in the use of a micromixer, which utilizes the phenomenon of acoustic microstreaming, to mix fluids at microliter scales more effectively than shaking, vortexing or trituration.
