Air Aspiration

Air aspiration is the unintended entry of air into the larynx or lower respiratory tract during swallowing, airway manipulation, or assisted ventilation, making it clinically relevant because it can compromise airway protection and breathing. It occurs when coordination among the tongue, pharynx, epiglottis, and vocal folds fails to direct airflow and swallowed material along separate pathways, often provoking coughing or changes in respiratory effort. Recognizing air aspiration helps clinicians assess swallowing and airway function, identify impaired protective reflexes, and distinguish abnormal airway entry from effective ventilation. These assessments support safer feeding, respiratory care, anesthesia, and management of patients with neurological or structural airway disorders.
