Solute Transport

Solute transport is the movement of dissolved substances across biological membranes or through body fluids, a process essential for maintaining cellular composition and physiological function. It occurs through passive diffusion down concentration or electrochemical gradients, facilitated diffusion via selective channels or carriers, and active transport powered by ATP or coupled ion gradients; membrane permeability and transporter specificity determine the direction and rate of movement. In clinical science, solute transport helps explain renal filtration and reabsorption, intestinal nutrient uptake, electrolyte balance, and drug distribution. Understanding these mechanisms supports interpretation of transport disorders and development of therapies that target membrane carriers or fluid compartments.

Transcellular Transport of Solutes

2023

Transcellular transport of solutes is the movement of substances like monosaccharides and amino acids through polarized cells. This transport mechanism is primarily seen in epithelial and endothelial cells aided by membrane transport proteins such as channels and transporters. The tight junctions between these cells confine the membrane proteins to the two sides of the cell. The epithelial cells have distinct apical and basolateral domains. In contrast, the endothelial cells show the luminal...

Pharmacogenetics of Drug Transporters: P-Glycoprotein and Solute Carrier Transporters

2026

The pharmacogenetics of drug transporters is increasingly recognized as a critical factor influencing interindividual variability in drug absorption, distribution, and elimination. These membrane-bound proteins regulate drugs' movement across cellular barriers by actively pumping them out (efflux) or facilitating their uptake (influx). Among the major transporter families, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) and solute carrier (SLC) transporters play particularly prominent roles. Genetic polymorphisms...

Transport and Acclimatization of Rodents for Research

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Transporting rodents for research requires procedures that minimize stress and maintain animal welfare during movement to minimize the influence on experimental outcomes. Transport cages should provide adequate ventilation,...

Regulated mRNA Transport

2020

In eukaryotes, transcription and translation are compartmentalized; an mRNA is first synthesized in the nucleus and then selectively transported to the cytoplasm for protein synthesis. Before transport, a pre-mRNA undergoes several steps of post-transcriptional modifications including splicing, 5' capping, and the addition of a poly-adenine tail. Various proteins bind to the pre-mRNA during these modifications. The mRNA transport takes place with the help of multiple proteins playing specific...
