Electrical Load Testing

Electrical load testing is the controlled application of electrical demand to a power source, circuit, or system to evaluate its performance, capacity, and safety under operating conditions. During a test, engineers connect a known or variable load and measure parameters such as voltage, current, power, frequency, temperature, and voltage drop while increasing demand toward the system’s rated limits. The results reveal overload conditions, inadequate wiring, unstable power delivery, overheating, and component degradation that may not appear during no-load operation. Electrical load testing supports the commissioning and maintenance of generators, batteries, transformers, power supplies, and distribution systems, helping verify reliability, efficiency, and compliance before deployment.

In this protocol, two approaches are described to make uniaxial compression testing of mouse lumbar vertebrae more attainable. First, the conversion of a three-point bending machine to a compression testing machine is described. Second, an embedding method for preparing the loading surface that uses bone cement is adapted for mouse lumbar vertebrae.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN An electric field is generated by a charged object (referred to as the source charge) in the space around it, and represents the ability to exert electric force on another charged object (referred to as the test charge). Represented by a vector at any given point in the space, the electric field is the electrical force per unit test charge placed at that point (the force...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

Tension Tests of Polymers

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...
