Fixed Point Observation

Fixed point observation is an engineering monitoring method that repeatedly measures a system, structure, or environmental condition at a designated, stable location or reference point. By keeping the observation point and measurement conditions consistent, engineers can compare successive readings and identify displacement, deformation, settlement, vibration, or other changes relative to the baseline. The method commonly uses surveying instruments, sensors, or other measurement devices and depends on accurate reference control, repeatable procedures, and defined observation intervals. In civil, structural, geotechnical, and industrial engineering, fixed point observation supports condition assessment, construction control, deformation monitoring, maintenance planning, and early detection of potentially significant system changes.

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University If you want to know how someone thinks or feels, you can ask that person questions. Another approach is to observe how the person is acting or look for indicators of how they acted in the past. While observations may seem revealing, it isn’t always easy to know if they are truly accurate. For instance, you may see a person smiling and assume they are happy, when in reality they are annoyed and...

Naturalistic Observations

If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...
