Glass Microfluidics

Glass microfluidics is the design and use of microscale channels and devices fabricated in glass to control, transport, and analyze very small liquid volumes. These systems guide fluids through precisely patterned channels using pressure-driven flow, capillary action, or electrokinetic forces; glass provides optical transparency, chemical resistance, and surfaces that support controlled electroosmotic flow. Glass microfluidic platforms enable rapid mixing, separation, chemical reactions, cell handling, and analytical measurements while reducing sample and reagent consumption. Their dimensional stability and compatibility with optical detection make them valuable in engineering research, including lab-on-a-chip devices, biomedical analysis, and integrated microsystems.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

Multi-step Variable Height Photolithography for Valved Multilayer Microfluidic Devices

Multilayer microfluidic devices often involve the fabrication of master molds with complex geometries for functionality. This article presents a complete protocol for multi-step photolithography with valves and variable height features tunable to any application. As a demonstration, we fabricate a microfluidic droplet generator capable of producing hydrogel beads.

Source: Sutlief, A. L., et al. Live Cell Analysis of Shear Stress on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Using an Automated Higher-Throughput Microfluidic System. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the preparation of a microfluidic plate for shear stress studies in bacterial cultures. After priming the channels with media, bacterial cells are introduced into the experimental channel and incubated for attachment. Residual media and culture are removed to prepare the system for subsequent shear...
