Indium Tin Oxide

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a transparent conducting oxide, a material that combines high optical transmission with electrical conductivity for applications where both properties are essential. It consists of indium oxide doped with tin, and its conductivity arises from additional charge carriers introduced by the dopant and oxygen vacancies, while its wide electronic band gap allows visible light to pass through. Engineers deposit thin ITO films onto glass, polymers, or semiconductor surfaces to form transparent electrodes. These films support touchscreens, liquid-crystal and organic light-emitting displays, solar cells, electrochromic windows, and other optoelectronic devices, although material cost and mechanical brittleness motivate research into alternatives.

Non-fouling PEG silane monolayer was desorbed from individually addressable ITO electrodes on glass by application of a reductive potential. Electrochemical stripping of PEG-silane layer from ITO microelectrodes allowed for cell adhesion to take place in a spatially defined fashion, with cellular patterns corresponding closely to electrode patterns.

Fabrication of a Solution-gated Indium-Tin-Oxide-based One-piece Transistor Enabling Sensitive Biosensing

2025

This protocol describes the fabrication of a one-piece indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-based ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET), which can be constructed as a solution-gated FET sensor (e.g., pH sensor) using a short and simple process (approximately half a day). This one-piece ITO-ISFET can also be applied to biosensing.

A procedure for performing reductive electropolymerization of vinyl-containing compounds onto glassy carbon and fluorine doped tin-oxide coated electrodes is presented. Recommendations on electrochemical cell configurations and troubleshooting procedures are included. Although not explicitly described here, oxidative electropolymerization of pyrrole-containing compounds follows similar procedures to vinyl-based reductive electropolymerization.
