Locked Rotor Test

The locked rotor test is a standard electrical test for determining the starting characteristics and equivalent-circuit parameters of an induction motor by preventing its rotor from turning. With the rotor mechanically restrained, a controlled, typically reduced, AC voltage is applied to the stator, and the resulting current, input power, and torque are measured; because slip is one, the rotor operates at its starting condition and the measured impedance reflects both stator and rotor effects. Engineers use these data to estimate starting current, starting torque, losses, and voltage drop, supporting motor selection, performance prediction, protection design, and validation of analytical or simulation models.

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.

Self-Locking Screw

2023

A square-threaded screw jack is a mechanical device widely used for lifting heavy loads or applying considerable force. One of the key features that can make a screw jack more effective and reliable is its self-locking capability. A square-threaded screw jack carrying a load is considered self-locking if the screw retains its position even after the moment applied to it is removed. This occurs when the frictional force direction reverses, and the reaction force acts on the other side of the...

Automation of Mode Locking in a Nonlinear Polarization Rotation Fiber Laser through Output Polarization Measurements

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
