Microwave Reflectance

Microwave reflectance is the fraction of incident microwave energy returned from a surface, interface, or device, making it a useful indicator of electromagnetic behavior in engineering systems. It arises when a microwave encounters an impedance mismatch, causing part of the signal to reflect rather than transmit or be absorbed; the reflected response varies with frequency, material permittivity, conductivity, geometry, and surface condition. Engineers measure reflectance through quantities such as reflected power or the scattering parameter S11 to characterize antennas, transmission lines, coatings, and materials. These measurements support radar sensing, nondestructive testing, moisture detection, and the design and optimization of microwave components.

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Light travels at different speeds depending on the material through which it is propagating. When light travels from one material to another, it will either slow down or speed up. In order to conserve energy and momentum, the light must change the direction in which it propagates. This bending of light is known as refraction. Some fraction of the...
