Pressure Drop Analysis

Pressure drop analysis is the engineering evaluation of how fluid pressure decreases as flow moves through pipes, channels, valves, fittings, and other components. It quantifies energy losses caused by wall friction, changes in geometry, and local disturbances, using factors such as flow rate, pipe diameter, length, surface roughness, fluid properties, and Reynolds number. Engineers apply pressure drop analysis to size piping, select pumps and control valves, assess HVAC and process systems, and identify restrictions that may limit performance. Accurate predictions improve energy efficiency, operating reliability, and system safety while supporting effective design and troubleshooting.

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

The shape of a small drop of liquid can be considered spherical, neglecting the effect of gravity. This drop can further be considered as two equal hemispherical drops put together due to surface tension. The forces acting on the spherical drop are due to the pressure of the liquid inside the drop, the pressure due to air outside the drop, and the force due to the surface tension acting on the two hemispherical drops. where γ corresponds to the surface tension. Recalling that the force per...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.
