Water Contact Angle Measurements

Water contact angle measurements quantify how a water droplet interacts with a solid surface by determining the angle formed at the liquid-solid-gas boundary. In a sessile-drop measurement, a droplet rests on the material while imaging software fits its profile and calculates the contact angle, which reflects the balance of interfacial tensions and surface wettability. Low angles indicate stronger spreading and greater hydrophilicity, whereas high angles indicate limited spreading and greater hydrophobicity. In engineering, these measurements help evaluate coatings, surface treatments, adhesion, printing, corrosion resistance, and biomedical materials, providing a practical indicator of surface cleanliness, chemistry, and performance.

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

A shear cell is developed for small-angle neutron scattering measurements in the velocity-velocity gradient plane of shear and is used to characterize complex fluids. Spatially resolved measurements in the velocity gradient direction are possible for studying shear-banding materials. Applications include investigations of colloidal dispersions, polymer solutions, and self-assembled structures.
