Cesium-137

Cesium-137 is a radioactive isotope of cesium and an important environmental contaminant because its penetrating radiation and persistence can affect ecosystems and human health. Produced mainly by nuclear fission, it undergoes beta decay to barium-137m, which emits characteristic gamma radiation, with a half-life of about 30 years. In soil, Cesium-137 can bind to clay minerals, though plants may absorb it and transfer it through food webs. Environmental scientists measure its activity to track fallout, assess contamination after nuclear accidents, evaluate transport through ecosystems, and guide remediation and long-term radiological monitoring.
