Forest Biomass

Forest biomass is the total organic material in a forest ecosystem, including living vegetation, roots, dead wood, litter, and associated organic matter. It accumulates through photosynthesis, which converts atmospheric carbon dioxide and light energy into plant tissue, and changes as growth, decomposition, disturbance, and harvesting redistribute carbon and nutrients among vegetation, soil, and the atmosphere. Measuring forest biomass with field inventories, remote sensing, and ecological models helps quantify carbon storage, assess ecosystem productivity, monitor wildfire and land-use impacts, and evaluate biomass energy resources. These assessments support climate research, sustainable forest management, biodiversity planning, and environmental policy.

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to screen enzymes effective in degrading complex polysaccharides in plant biomass using insoluble chromogenic biomass or ICB. The enzymes hydrolyze ICB to release soluble dye-linked oligosaccharides, and the enzyme activity is assessed by colorimetric analysis of the reaction product.
