European Buckthorn

European buckthorn, commonly called common buckthorn, is an invasive woody shrub native to Europe that has become established in parts of North America, where it can displace native vegetation and reduce habitat quality. Its spread is aided by abundant seed production, bird-mediated dispersal, and early leaf emergence, which allows it to capture light and resources before many native plants. In environmental sciences, researchers study European buckthorn to assess invasion effects on forest structure, soil processes, and biodiversity, while land managers use surveys, mechanical removal, targeted herbicide treatment, and follow-up monitoring to restore affected ecosystems.

The Rise of European Leisure

2025

In recent decades, many European countries have gradually shifted toward shorter working hours, reflecting a growing preference for leisure and personal time. This change has been driven by labor agreements, workplace reforms, and productivity gains that enable the same results to be achieved in fewer hours. In the early 2000s, most full-time workers in Europe still followed longer weekly schedules, often exceeding thirty-six hours and totaling close to, or above, 1,600 hours annually. Over...

Here are methods to quantify nutrients in pollen before and after its conversion to beebread by two subspecies of honeybees. We describe techniques to measure beebread consumption and resulting protein titers in both subspecies.

Assessing Intertidal Populations of the Invasive European Green Crab

2020

Understanding spatiotemporal patterns in green crab population dynamics is essential for predicting and managing the ecological and economic impacts of this harmful invasive species. This protocol was developed in an effort to create a standardized method for assessing green crab populations in the rocky intertidal zone of the Northwest Atlantic.

Analysis of Earthworm Populations in Soil

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Using mustard, Lumbricus terrestris earthworm populations can be sampled directly from soil depths without landscape disturbance or toxicity. Earthworms can then be counted for data and statistical analysis using a bar graph and student’s t-test. Monitoring earthworm populations is a vital technique for environmental scientists, as multiple species of earthworms (most notably those from the suborder Lumbricina) have...

Enhancing an Avian Sound Recognition Model's Detection Precision via Logistic Regression of Large Acoustic Datasets: A Case Study of the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula)
