Bronchoscopy Samples

Bronchoscopy samples are respiratory specimens collected during bronchoscopy, a procedure that allows clinicians and researchers to obtain material from the lower airways for diagnosis and investigation. A flexible bronchoscope guides collection of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, airway brushings, mucus, or tissue biopsies, while lavage uses sterile fluid to recover cells, microorganisms, and soluble molecules from targeted lung regions. In immunology and infection research, these samples support pathogen detection, cellular and cytokine analysis, histopathology, and evaluation of airway inflammation. Their localized origin can provide evidence about host immune responses and infectious processes that may not be captured by blood or upper-airway specimens.

2020

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff while reducing the risk of infection. COVID patients often suffer from respiratory insufficiency and increased intrapulmonal secretion. A bronchoscopy is one of the standard procedures for resolving respiratory tract obstruction in intensive care medicine. On the downside, this procedure has a high...

Endoscopy is a non-surgical medical technique used to examine a person's internal organs and vessels. This lesson will focus on two types of endoscopic studies: bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy. Bronchoscopy Description Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves direct visualization of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A flexible fiber optic or rigid bronchoscope is used to carry out the procedure. The fiber-optic bronchoscope is more frequently used due to...

We describe a research technique for fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage using low pressure suction. The technique is used to harvest immune cells from the lung bronchoalveolar surfaces. Local anesthetic and mild conscious sedation (midazolam) is used. Subjects tolerate the procedure well and experience minimal side effects.
