Apprehension Test

The Apprehension Test is a clinical examination maneuver used to assess joint instability, most commonly anterior instability of the shoulder. With the patient’s arm abducted and externally rotated, the examiner gently stresses the glenohumeral joint; a feeling that the shoulder may dislocate, rather than pain alone, suggests apprehension caused by anterior translation of the humeral head. A relocation maneuver that reduces this sensation can further support the finding. Clinicians use the test alongside the patient’s history and other stability assessments to evaluate suspected recurrent dislocation, guide diagnosis, and inform rehabilitation or surgical planning.

Knee Exam

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

Eye tracking has long been used to study gaze patterns in typically-developing individuals, but recent technological advancements have made its use with clinical populations, including autism, more feasible. While eye-tracking young children with autism can offer insight into early symptom manifestations, it involves methodological challenges. Suggestions for best practices are provided.

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.
