Bacterial Culture Analysis

Bacterial culture analysis is a laboratory method that detects and characterizes bacteria in clinical specimens, helping identify infectious causes of disease and guide treatment. A specimen is inoculated onto selected growth media and incubated under controlled conditions, allowing bacterial cells to multiply into visible colonies; scientists then assess colony morphology, perform biochemical or molecular identification tests, and evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility. In medicine, these results support the diagnosis of infections, distinguish potential pathogens from normal flora or contaminants, and help clinicians select effective antibiotics. Culture analysis also contributes to infection surveillance, resistance monitoring, and research on bacterial physiology and disease transmission.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...
