Conscious Rat Model

A conscious rat model is an experimental animal model in which physiological, behavioral, or disease-related responses are measured while the rat remains awake, reducing interference from anesthesia. The approach uses controlled handling, restraint, or monitoring procedures to record variables such as blood pressure, heart rate, metabolism, and drug responses under conscious conditions. In medicine, conscious rat studies support pharmacology, cardiovascular research, neuroscience, and toxicology by revealing treatment effects and functional changes that anesthetic agents could mask. These models can therefore improve the interpretation of preclinical findings and help assess how interventions may act in an intact, functioning organism.

The hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp is the "gold standard" for the assessment of insulin action. Insulin is infused at a constant rate stimulating glucose uptake. The amount of exogenous glucose infused to counter this drop is indicative of insulin sensitivity. Here the procedure is performed on a conscious, unrestrained rat.

We show surgical implantation and Recording procedures to measure visual electrophysiological signals from the eye (electroretinogram) and brain (visual evoked potential) in conscious rats, which is more analogous to the human condition where recordings are conducted without anesthesia confounds.

Conscious and Non-conscious Representations of Emotional Faces in Asperger's Syndrome

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.
