Donor Lung Harvest

Donor lung harvest is the surgical retrieval and preservation of lungs from a deceased donor for transplantation, a process that provides viable organs for patients with advanced respiratory disease. After donor assessment and stabilization, surgeons carefully mobilize the lungs, divide the airway and pulmonary vessels, and flush the organs with a cold preservation solution to reduce metabolism and limit ischemic injury. The lungs are then cooled, packaged, and transported for implantation in a recipient. Precise coordination among procurement, critical care, and transplant teams helps maintain graft quality, minimize preservation-related damage, and expand the availability of life-saving lung transplantation.

Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

Here, we describe the necessary steps for establishing a rat EVLP model and show the inflammatory profile associated with the perfused lungs. The aim is to propagate knowledge and experiences about the rat EVLP model, enabling the integral understanding of the biological responses associated with that revolutionary technique.

University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
