Intake Microstructure Analysis

Intake microstructure analysis is a behavioral method that examines the fine-scale organization of eating, providing insight beyond total food or fluid consumed. It records individual intake events over time and quantifies features such as bout size, bout duration, eating rate, and intervals between bouts to characterize how feeding behavior unfolds. In medicine and behavioral neuroscience, these measures help distinguish altered hunger, satiety, motivation, and meal termination from simple changes in overall intake. The approach supports studies of appetite regulation, obesity, metabolic disease, and the effects of medications or physiological interventions, while linking observable feeding patterns to underlying biological mechanisms.

We present methods for fabrication of patterned microstructures of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and their use as master molds for production of polymer microstructures with organized nanoscale surface texture. The CNT forests are densified by condensation of solvent onto the substrate, which significantly increases their packing density and enables self-directed formation of 3D shapes.

Regulation of Water Intake

2024

Osmolality refers to the number of solute particles per kilogram of solvent in a solution. Plasma osmolality specifically indicates the total number of solute particles per kilogram of water in blood plasma. This value reflects the body's hydration status and is tightly regulated through mechanisms controlling water intake and output. While water consumption is a conscious decision, the body has intrinsic regulatory systems to maintain fluid balance. Dehydration, a state of water deficit...

Regulation of Food Intake

Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Improved Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Double Casting via Silicone Oil Treatment for Densely Packed Microstructure Replication

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.
