Needle Penetration

Needle penetration is the controlled insertion of a sharp, slender medical device through skin or other tissue to access a target, making it fundamental to injections, blood collection, biopsies, and minimally invasive procedures. As the needle advances, its tip concentrates force to deform and separate tissue, while friction along the shaft and factors such as bevel geometry, insertion angle, speed, and tissue stiffness influence penetration force, accuracy, and patient discomfort. Understanding these interactions helps clinicians select appropriate needles and techniques, supports the design of safer drug-delivery and sampling devices, and informs research on tissue mechanics, procedural guidance, and robotic needle placement.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

Shifting Zebrafish Lethal Skeletal Mutant Penetrance by Progeny Testing

The goal of this protocol is to alter the penetrance of lethal skeletal mutant phenotypes in zebrafish by selective breeding. Lethal mutants cannot be grown to adulthood and bred themselves, therefore this protocol describes a method for tracking and selecting penetrance through multiple generations by progeny testing.

Inducing Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury in Adult Drosophila Flies

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of penetrating traumatic brain injury in the drosophila brain. Newly emerged flies are selected, anesthetized, and positioned under a fluorescence-equipped stereo microscope. The GFP-expressing mushroom body is identified, and a Minutien pin is inserted to cause injury. The flies are allowed to recover for further studies.

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA A tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening situation in which excess air is introduced into the pleural space surrounding the lung, either through trauma to the chest cavity or as a spontaneous leak of air from the lung itself. Air trapped within the pleural space causes separation of the lung from the chest wall, disrupting normal breathing mechanisms. Pneumothorax may be small without...
