Nerve Muscle Recordings

Nerve muscle recordings are electrophysiological measurements of electrical activity in peripheral nerves and skeletal muscles, providing functional information that complements anatomical imaging and clinical examination. In nerve conduction studies, surface electrodes deliver a controlled stimulus and detect compound action potentials, while electromyography records voltage changes produced by motor units through surface or needle electrodes; latency, amplitude, and conduction velocity help characterize signal transmission. In medicine, these recordings support the evaluation of weakness, numbness, neuropathy, radiculopathy, myopathy, and neuromuscular junction disorders. They also help localize lesions, assess disease severity, monitor progression, and guide treatment or rehabilitation decisions.

Recording Changes in Renal Sympathetic Nerve Activity in Response to Arterial Pressure in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a technique of studying the activity of renal sympathetic nerves (RSNs) in response to changes in arterial pressure in rats. Upon attaching a pressure-sensing catheter to the femoral artery, the renal sympathetic nerves are exposed. The nerves are then lifted onto a recording electrode, and their electrical activity is recorded. Next, a vasoconstricting drug is injected to elevate blood pressure, and corresponding changes in RSN activity are monitored.

In Vivo Single-Fiber Recording of Sciatic Nerve C-Fibers in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a single-fiber recording of C-fiber nerve conduction in rats. An anesthetized rat is incised to expose the sciatic nerve, which provides sensory and motor supply to the lower limbs. The individual C-fibers are then exposed. Electrical stimulation is provided using stimulus electrodes implanted in the foot, and a response is recorded from a single nerve fiber.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials by Stimulating the Phrenic Nerve in a Rat

2025

This video describes recording compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) in diaphragm muscle fibers in a rat through phrenic nerve stimulation. A high-intensity electric pulse stimulation of the phrenic nerve generates action potentials in the diaphragm muscle fibers, which are observed by obtaining the response curve.
