Preterm Intestine Model

A preterm intestine model is an experimental system that recreates the structure and immature function of the intestine in infants born before full gestation, supporting research into neonatal gastrointestinal disease. These models use approaches such as intestinal organoids, ex vivo tissue, or animal systems to represent developing epithelial barriers, nutrient handling, microbial interactions, and inflammatory responses. Researchers apply them to investigate necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious disorder associated with intestinal inflammation and tissue injury, and to evaluate nutrition strategies, protective therapies, and potential drugs. By linking intestinal development with disease mechanisms, preterm intestine models can improve understanding of neonatal care and help guide safer, more precise interventions.

2025

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.
