Raw Rhubarb Extract

Raw rhubarb extract is a preparation made from unprocessed rhubarb root and rhizome, valued in traditional and pharmacological medicine for its chemically diverse plant constituents. Its effects depend on anthraquinone glycosides, which are metabolized by intestinal bacteria into compounds that stimulate colonic secretion and motility, while tannins can contribute to an astringent action; processing and dose influence the balance of these activities. Consequently, rhubarb extracts have been investigated and used in preparations for constipation and digestive disorders, but their variable composition and potential for electrolyte loss, abdominal cramping, and drug interactions make standardized products and medical guidance important.

Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide. Despite establishments enacting measures to reduce the prevalence throughout their facilities, contaminated products consistently reach consumers. The technique developed over the past twelve years addresses limitations of existing methods for isolating and detecting Campylobacter spp. from raw meat.

Solid-Liquid Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jay Deiner — City University of New York Extraction is a crucial step in most chemical analyses. It entails removing the analyte from its sample matrix and passing it into the phase required for spectroscopic or chromatographic identification and quantification. When the sample is a solid and the required phase for analysis is a liquid, the process is called solid-liquid extraction. A simple and broadly applicable form of solid-liquid extraction entails combining the...

Extraction Extraction is a common technique used in organic chemistry to isolate a target compound. In the extraction process, a solute is transferred from one phase to another to separate it from unreacted starting materials or impurities. Extraction is also used to facilitate the isolation of a solute from a reaction solvent that is difficult to remove by evaporation, such as a solvent with a high boiling point. Generally, there are three types of extractions. First, in solid-liquid...

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...
