Regional Lung Function

Regional lung function describes how ventilation, perfusion, and gas exchange vary among different areas of the lungs rather than across the organ as a whole. These regional differences arise from gravity, airway and vascular anatomy, tissue mechanics, and disease-related changes that alter airflow or blood flow; they can be assessed with techniques such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine scans, or electrical impedance tomography. Evaluating regional lung function helps clinicians identify uneven ventilation, perfusion defects, and poorly functioning tissue, supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring in conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, and respiratory failure.

Identification of Functional Protein Regions Through Chimeric Protein Construction

2019

Structurally related proteins frequently exert distinct biological functions. The exchange of equivalent regions of these proteins in order to create chimeric proteins constitutes an innovative approach to identify critical protein regions that are responsible for their functional divergence.

Three-dimensional (3D) phase-resolved functional lung (PREFUL) is a functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that allows for quantification of regional ventilation of the whole human lung volume, using tidal breathing and contrast-agent free acquisition for 8 min. Here, we present an MR protocol to collect and analyze 3D PREFUL imaging data.
