Speech Subsystem Analysis

Speech subsystem analysis is a clinical method for evaluating the physiological systems that support speech, including respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and prosody. It examines how these subsystems coordinate to convert respiratory airflow into controlled vocal sound and intelligible language, while identifying disruptions in timing, strength, range, or coordination. In medicine, clinicians use this analysis to characterize motor speech disorders associated with neurological injury, developmental conditions, and progressive disease. Findings can help distinguish dysarthria from other communication impairments, guide targeted assessment and rehabilitation, and track changes in function over time.

Ultrasound imaging can be used to display the shape and movements of the tongue in real time during speech. The images can be used to determine the nature of speech sound errors. Visual feedback of the tongue can be used to facilitate improvements in speech sound production in clinical populations.

Objective assessments of the physiological mechanisms that support speech are needed to monitor disease onset and progression in persons with ALS and to quantify treatment effects in clinical trials. In this video, we present a comprehensive, instrumentation-based protocol for quantifying speech motor performance in clinical populations.

Memorization-Based Training and Testing Paradigm for Robust Vocal Identity Recognition in Expressive Speech Using Event-Related Potentials Analysis

The study introduces a training-testing paradigm to investigate old/new effects of event-related potentials in confident and doubtful prosodic scenarios. Data reveals an enhanced late positive component between 400-850 ms at Pz and other electrodes. This pipeline can explore factors beyond speech prosody and their influence on cue-binding target identification.

Navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a highly efficient non-invasive tool for mapping speech-related cortical areas. It helps in designing brain surgery and speeds up the direct cortical stimulation conducted during the surgery. This report describes how to perform speech cortical mapping reliably for preoperative evaluation and research.
