Underwater Endoscopy

Underwater endoscopy is an endoscopic technique that uses water immersion to improve visualization and maneuverability within the gastrointestinal tract, offering an alternative to gas insufflation during selected procedures. Water is infused into the lumen, where it distends the bowel less than air or carbon dioxide and can help flatten folds, center lesions, and reduce looping of the endoscope. In colonoscopy, this approach may support insertion, adenoma detection, and resection, particularly when conventional advancement is difficult or discomfort is a concern. It also provides a useful framework for studying how immersion affects mucosal visibility, therapeutic access, and patient tolerance in gastrointestinal medicine.

Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers, unexplained...
