Ecog Emg Implantation

ECoG and EMG implantation is a neuroscience method for recording electrical activity from the cerebral cortex and muscles, enabling researchers to examine how brain signals relate to movement. During the procedure, electrodes are positioned on or beneath the cortical surface for electrocorticography and within or near selected muscles for electromyography; these sensors detect voltage changes produced by neuronal populations and muscle-fiber depolarization. Synchronized recordings can map motor pathways, characterize brain-muscle communication, and support the development of brain-computer interfaces. The technique also contributes to studies of motor disorders, neural control, and emerging neuroprosthetic systems by providing high-resolution physiological data.

We present a method for collecting electrocorticographic signals for research purposes from humans who are undergoing invasive epilepsy monitoring. We show how to use the BCI2000 software platform for data collection, signal processing and stimulus presentation. Specifically, we demonstrate SIGFRIED, a BCI2000-based tool for real-time functional brain mapping.
