Implicit Emotional Control

Implicit emotional control is the automatic modulation of emotional responses without deliberate awareness, making it an important concept in neuroscience and affective science. It operates through rapid processes such as attention, learned associations, and appraisal, which can alter activity in emotion-related circuits, including interactions between the amygdala and prefrontal regions, before conscious regulation occurs. Studying these processes helps researchers distinguish automatic from intentional emotion regulation and examine how past experience shapes behavior, stress responses, and social interactions. This framework also informs research on anxiety, mood disorders, decision-making, and interventions designed to strengthen adaptive emotional control.

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University One of the core constructs in social psychology is the notion of an attitude toward an object or person. Traditionally, psychologists measured attitudes by simply asking people to self-report their beliefs, opinions, or feelings. This approach has limitations, however, when measuring socially sensitive attitudes, like racial prejudice, because people are often motivated to self-report unprejudiced, egalitarian beliefs (despite...

We present a protocol that allows investigation of the neural correlates of deliberate and automatic emotion regulation, using functional magnetic resonance imaging. This protocol can be used in healthy participants, both young and older, as well as in clinical patients.

Inducing Emotions

Source: William Brady & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Psychologists have long known that people behave differently in good moods versus bad moods, and this general principle extends to consumer behavior. Economists, as well, have come to appreciate that an individual’s financial decisions are not solely the result of extensive cost-benefit calculations; other factors like emotion are at play. Further, incidental emotions affect the behavior of buyers and sellers even though they are...

Implicit Memories

Implicit memories, also known as non-declarative memories, are long-term memories that function outside of conscious awareness. These memories influence behavior and skills without explicit knowledge. This type of memory is evident in tasks like playing tennis, snowboarding, and texting. Implicit memory has three subsystems: procedural memory, conditioning, and priming. This type of memory is essential in various activities, from everyday tasks to specialized skills. One key aspect of implicit...

Implicit Differentiation

In classical mechanics, motion is often described through relationships between spatial coordinates and time. A car moving along a straight highway with constant acceleration serves as a simple case where velocity is an explicit function of time. This scenario results in a linear equation, enabling straightforward analysis using basic differentiation techniques. In contrast, a satellite in circular orbit follows a path defined by an implicit function. The position of the satellite is constrained...
