Inspiratory Burst

An inspiratory burst is a rhythmic episode of neural activity that initiates inhalation by activating respiratory motor pathways. In the medullary respiratory network, especially the pre-Bötzinger complex, excitatory synaptic interactions and intrinsic membrane properties recruit neurons into coordinated bursts that drive phrenic motor neurons and diaphragm contraction. Researchers measure these bursts with electrophysiological recordings to investigate respiratory rhythm generation, neuronal excitability, and synaptic coordination. Studying inspiratory bursts helps explain how the nervous system produces stable breathing patterns and provides experimental insight into disrupted respiration associated with neurological disease, anesthesia, and developmental abnormalities.

Inspiratory Muscle Training as an Adjunct to the Treatment of Weaning Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Practical Guide

2026

Respiratory muscle weakness is highly prevalent in patients weaning from mechanical ventilation. Resistive inspiratory muscle training (IMT) can improve inspiratory strength and potentially weaning outcomes. This protocol provides a structured approach to offer IMT to selected patients based on the best available knowledge, facilitating its wider application in critical care.

An Assay to Assess Phagocytosis and Oxidative Burst Activity In Granulocytes and Monocytes

This video demonstrates the assay to confirm phagocytic activity by cells in human blood via flow cytometry. The granulocytes and monocytes confirm their phagocytic activity by showing green and red fluorescence confirming the presence of engulfed bacteria and oxidative burst activity respectively.

Quantification of the Respiratory Burst Response as an Indicator of Innate Immune Health in Zebrafish

The innate immune response protects organisms against pathogen infection. A critical component of the innate immune response, the phagocyte respiratory burst, generates reactive oxygen species that kill invading microorganisms. We describe a respiratory burst assay that quantifies reactive oxygen species produced when the innate immune response is chemically induced.

An Assay to Detect Oxidative Burst in Arabidopsis Leaf Discs upon Immune Elicitation

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to measure oxidative burst in Arabidopsis leaves upon immune elicitation. Leaf discs, cut from plant leaves, are incubated with bacterial peptides functioning as microbe-associated molecular patterns or MAMPs. Upon detection of the MAMPs, plant cells induce the production of extracellular ROS, which is detected using a chemiluminescence assay.
