Rat Behavior Testing

Rat behavior testing is the systematic measurement of behavioral responses in rats to investigate how the brain supports movement, learning, memory, emotion, and sensory function. Researchers place animals in standardized tasks or environments, present controlled stimuli or challenges, and record outcomes such as locomotion, exploration, task performance, or avoidance, often comparing untreated and experimentally altered groups. In neuroscience, these assays help link behavioral changes to neural circuits, brain injury, genetic factors, or pharmacological treatments. Careful control of testing conditions and objective scoring improves reproducibility, supports disease modeling, and aids evaluation of potential therapies.

Disease, head injury, genetic modifications, and treatment of mice with drugs can have profound effects on behavior. Utilizing well-characterized and validated approaches such as marble burying and nestlet shredding, compulsive-like behaviors can be documented accurately in mice as models of human obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

The ability to assess executive functions such as behavioral flexibility in rats is useful for investigating the neurobiology of cognition in both intact animals and disease models. Here we describe automated tasks for assessing strategy shifting and reversal learning, which are particularly sensitive to disruptions in prefrontal cortical networks.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.
