Saline-soaked Sponges

Saline-soaked sponges are porous materials saturated with an ionic solution, creating a soft, conductive interface for neuroscience experiments. Their saline-filled pores support ion movement and help maintain electrical contact between electrodes and biological tissue, while the sponge conforms to irregular surfaces and helps prevent direct mechanical contact. In electrophysiology and brain-stimulation setups, they can improve current delivery, reduce contact impedance, and support stable recording or stimulation conditions. Their simple design makes them useful for laboratory demonstrations, noninvasive stimulation methods, and experimental arrangements that require consistent hydration and electrical coupling at the tissue interface.

2012

A useful tool to analyze the effects of drugs, growth factors, and/or manipulated cells in an animal model of wound repair is described. This technique utilizes the properties of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge to deliver and contain the desired treatment and also provide a platform to be excised and analyzed.

A Hypertonic Saline Injection Technique for Inducing Glaucoma in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates glaucoma induction in an anesthetized rat by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The saline enters the trabecular meshwork via Schlemm's canal, causing tissue scarring, which blocks aqueous humor outflow and raises intraocular pressure. The elevated pressure damages retinal ganglion cells, leading to glaucoma.

Salinity Tolerance of Alishewanella Species Isolated from Seawall Muddy Water

Begin with a culture of Alishewanella, a Gram-negative, salt-tolerant bacterium.Next, streak the culture onto agar plates containing increasing concentrations of sodium chloride to simulate varying levels of saline stress.Overlay each plate with a layer of unsolidified medium to prevent oxygen diffusion and maintain the culture in an oxygen-limited environment.Seal and incubate the plates at an optimum temperature to support bacterial growth.During incubation, the bacterium exhibits varying...

Salinity-dependent Toxicity Assay of Silver Nanocolloids Using Medaka Eggs

Embryonic stages are the most susceptible to xenobiotics. Although chemical toxicity depends on salinity, no method exists to test the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Here, we describe a new and high-throughput method for determining the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic embryos.

Saline Lavage for Sampling of the Canine Nasal Immune Microenvironment

2024

Saline nasal lavage can be used to sample the canine nasal immune microenvironment. Because the approach is relatively non-invasive and does not disrupt the nasal tissues, it can be performed serially. Cells and proteins collected from the nasal lavage technique can be processed for various laboratory analyses.
