Schaffer Collateral Activation

Schaffer collateral activation is the experimental stimulation of axons from hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons that form excitatory synapses onto CA1 neurons. Typically produced by electrical pulses delivered to the Schaffer collateral pathway, it triggers glutamate release, activates postsynaptic AMPA and NMDA receptors, and generates excitatory postsynaptic potentials in CA1 cells. Researchers use this preparation in hippocampal slice electrophysiology to measure synaptic transmission, investigate long-term potentiation and depression, and examine the cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. Changes in CA1 responses after repeated or patterned stimulation provide a tractable model for studying neural plasticity and its disruption in neurological disease.

Sympathetic Pathways: Collateral Ganglia and Adrenal Medulla

2025

The sympathetic pathways of the collateral ganglia and adrenal medulla serve unique but interconnected roles in the sympathetic response. Collateral Ganglia Sympathetic preganglionic axons reach the collateral ganglia along the route of splanchnic nerves. These nerves bypass the sympathetic trunk and communicate with sympathetic postganglionic neurons housed in the prevertebral ganglia. These ganglia supply the organs of the abdominopelvic cavity. The greater splanchnic nerve, formed by the...

Measurement of Evoked Potassium Ion Concentration Dynamics in Coronal Hippocampal Slices

2025

The video demonstrates evoked potassium ion concentration dynamics on electrical stimulation of mouse coronal hippocampal brain slices. A bipolar stimulating electrode is inserted into the stratum radiatum of the CA3 region in the hippocampus, and a potassium-ion selective electrode is placed in the CA1 stratum radiatum. The electrical stimulation causes an action potential, resulting in potassium ion release. Finally, the lack of evoked potassium ion response in the presence of an inhibitory...

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.

Biological Catalysts All living organisms continuously perform numerous biochemical reactions to sustain their presence. Most of these reactions require an input of energy to start, which is called the activation energy. Catalysts are chemicals that lower the activation energy. Even though catalysts facilitate a chemical reaction, they are not consumed by it. This means a catalyst can facilitate a specific chemical reaction over and over in succession, increasing the rate of that reaction.

Co-activators and Co-repressors

Gene transcription is regulated by the synergistic action of several proteins that form a complex at a gene regulatory site. This is observed in eukaryotes, where the regulation of gene expression is a complex process. Regulatory proteins in eukaryotes can broadly be classified into two types – regulators that bind directly to specific DNA sequences and co-regulators that associate with regulatory proteins but cannot directly bind to the DNA. These co-regulators are further divided into...
