Smart Setup Protocol

Smart Setup Protocol is a standardized workflow for configuring, checking, and documenting the equipment, software, and experimental conditions needed for a neuroscience study. It works by organizing setup into reproducible stages, including parameter selection, instrument calibration, synchronization of data streams, and verification that signals meet predefined quality criteria before recording begins. By reducing operator-dependent variation and identifying technical problems early, the protocol supports more reliable measurements in electrophysiology, imaging, behavioral recording, and other neuroscience applications. Consistent setup improves data comparability across experiments, strengthens quality control, and can make complex laboratory procedures easier to teach, reproduce, and adapt to new research systems.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Imagine teaching two children how to skate. It is a hard task for both of them, and they fall down frequently. After falling down for the first time, one child says that skating is too hard and wants to go home. The other child seems to enjoy the challenge and eagerly gets back up after falling down each time. Why do the children have such different attitudes about the same task? One reason may be that they...

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.
