Tms Coil Positioning

TMS coil positioning is the deliberate placement and orientation of a transcranial magnetic stimulation coil over the scalp to target specific brain regions, making it essential for consistent and interpretable stimulation. When the coil delivers a rapidly changing magnetic field, it induces an electric field in the underlying cortex; small changes in coil location, angle, or distance can alter the strength and direction of current reaching neuronal circuits. In neuroscience, precise positioning supports motor-cortex mapping, measurement of cortical excitability, and stimulation of networks involved in cognition and behavior. Standardized placement improves reproducibility across sessions and helps researchers relate stimulation effects to anatomy and brain function.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
