Rat Ganglion Cells

Rat ganglion cells are neurons found in clusters, or ganglia, within the rat nervous system; retinal ganglion cells are a well-studied example that transmit visual information from the retina to the brain. These cells receive synaptic inputs through dendrites, integrate electrical signals in the soma, and propagate action potentials along axons to downstream neural targets. In neuroscience research, isolated or cultured rat ganglion cells support studies of neuronal development, axonal growth, synaptic signaling, and responses to injury or neurotoxic compounds. Their accessible anatomy and measurable electrophysiological activity make them useful models for investigating neural connectivity, sensory processing, and potential treatments for neurodegenerative disorders.

(2020).This video demonstrates imaging and quantification of axonal regeneration in axotomized rat retinal ganglion neurons (RGNs) co-cultured with immortalized human olfactory ensheathing glia cells. RGNs are immunolabeled, with red somas and green axons. Images were captured using an epifluorescence microscope,...

Here, we present a combinatorial approach for classifying neuronal cell types prior to isolation and for the subsequent characterization of single-cell transcriptomes. This protocol optimizes the preparation of samples for successful RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq) and describes a methodology designed specifically for the enhanced understanding of cellular diversity.

Millions of people suffer from retinal degenerative diseases that result in irreversible blindness. A common element of many of these diseases is the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). This detailed protocol describes the isolation of primary murine RGCs by positive and negative selection with flow cytometry.

We demonstrate an in vivo electroporation protocol for transfecting single or small clusters of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and other retinal cell types in postnatal mice over a wide range of ages. The ability to label and genetically manipulate postnatal RGCs in vivo is a powerful tool for developmental studies.
