Chloride Secretion

Chloride secretion is the regulated movement of chloride ions across epithelial tissues, a process that helps control fluid balance, electrolyte composition, and surface hydration. In secretory epithelia, basolateral transporters such as the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter accumulate chloride inside cells, while signaling pathways activate apical channels, including CFTR, allowing chloride to exit into the lumen; sodium and water often follow osmotically. In pharmacology, this mechanism is central to understanding intestinal fluid secretion, airway hydration, and disorders such as secretory diarrhea and cystic fibrosis. Drugs that alter chloride channels, transporters, or their regulatory pathways can therefore influence epithelial secretion and provide therapeutic or experimental strategies.
