Intrathecal Administration

Intrathecal administration is a drug-delivery method in which a medication is introduced directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), placing it close to the spinal cord and brain and making it important in pharmacology. Delivery typically occurs through lumbar puncture or an implanted catheter, allowing the drug to bypass much of the blood-brain barrier and act within the central nervous system. This route is used when systemic treatment provides insufficient nervous-system exposure, including administration of spinal anesthetics, analgesics, and selected anti-infective or anticancer agents. Its effectiveness depends on drug distribution, dose, CSF dynamics, and careful control of injection technique.

Self-administration Studies

Behavioral reinforcement induced by the rewarding feelings following substance use sometimes leads to addiction, which is demonstrated by increased self-administration. Drug self-administration studies in rodents model human behavior during drug abuse. These models are useful in understanding the neurobiological behavior of addiction in order to help scientists discover new treatments for drug dependence. This video reviews the concepts underlying self-administration studies. A general...
