Force And Motion

Force and motion are fundamental concepts in physics that describe how interactions change an object’s movement, position, or state of rest. Motion occurs when an object’s position changes over time, while forces such as gravity, friction, tension, and applied pushes or pulls can produce acceleration, alter direction, or maintain equilibrium; Newton’s laws relate force, mass, and acceleration. Understanding these relationships supports the analysis of mechanical systems, collisions, projectiles, and orbital motion. They also provide a foundation for engineering design, transportation, robotics, biomechanics, and the study of physical systems from everyday objects to planets.

Second Law: Motion under Same Force

2023

Newton's laws can be applied to bodies at rest and bodies in motion. Newton's first law is applied to bodies in equilibrium, whereas the second law applies to accelerating bodies. To study accelerating bodies, first, the directions and magnitudes of acceleration and the applied forces are determined. Then, the free-body diagram is constructed, and Newton's second law is applied, considering the components of the forces in the x and y directions. Let's imagine a person is standing on a weighing...

Central-Force Motion

The central force system operates by exerting a force on an object directed towards a fixed point, typically the origin, with the force magnitude determined by the object's distance from this fixed point. In the context of an object with mass 'm,' polar coordinates are employed to express the equation of motion. Notably, the azimuthal component of force is nonexistent in this system. A comprehensive rewrite and integration of this equation reveal that the product of the squared radial distance...

Source: Andrew Duffy, PhD, Department of Physics, Boston University, Boston, MA This experiment examines at various situations involving two interacting objects. First, the experiment examines the forces that two objects apply to one another while they collide. The objects are wheeled carts that have variable masses. The purpose of this experiment is to discover when the force the first cart exerts on the other is the same magnitude as the force the second cart exerts back on the first, as well...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Potential energy is an important concept in physics. Potential energy is the energy associated with forces that depend upon the position of an object relative to its surroundings. Gravitational potential energy, which is discussed in another video, is the energy associated that is directly proportional to the height of an object above...
