Sonic Boom

A sonic boom is the sharp sound produced when an object travels through air faster than the local speed of sound, making it a key example of compressible-flow behavior in physics. As the object moves supersonically, its pressure disturbances cannot propagate ahead of it; they accumulate into a shock wave that spreads outward along a conical Mach wave pattern, and observers hear a boom when this wave reaches them. Studying sonic booms helps explain supersonic flight, shock-wave formation, and aerodynamic design, while pressure and sound measurements guide efforts to reduce community noise and improve the practical use of high-speed aircraft.

Substantial Boom in the Housing Market

2026

Following the dot-com collapse and the September 11 Attacks, the United States entered a brief recession in 2001. In response, the Federal Reserve implemented a highly accommodative monetary policy to stimulate economic recovery. Short-term interest rates were aggressively reduced. This sharp decline in borrowing costs significantly affected the housing market by making mortgage loans far more affordable. When banks faced lower short-term borrowing costs from the Federal Reserve, they were able...

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The material comprising the living "organic" share of any ecosystem (leaves, fungi, bark, tissue; Figure 1) differs fundamentally from the material of the non-living "inorganic" share (rocks and their constituent minerals, oxygen, water, metals). Organic material contains carbon linked to a series of other carbon and hydrogen molecules (Figure 2), which distinguishes it from inorganic material. Carbon's wide valency range...

This video describes the selective damage of human leukemia cells by using low frequency ultrasound. This application of low frequency ultrasound in a preclinical in vitro condition demonstrates that cell destruction can be attained in order to examine and compare the effects of sonication on leukemia and normal cells.

Differential diagnostics in painful arthroplasty is crucial for treatment success. Joint aspiration is routinely performed preoperatively. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction of the joint aspirate and the sonication fluid, a feasible tool for quick pathogen detection from these samples is described.
