Hypervigilance

Hypervigilance is a heightened state of alertness in which a person continuously scans the environment for possible threats, often beyond what the situation requires. In psychology, it involves increased threat monitoring, sensory sensitivity, and difficulty shifting attention away from potential danger, and may accompany anxiety, trauma-related conditions, or prolonged stress. Persistent hypervigilance can contribute to sleep disruption, concentration difficulties, irritability, and physical exhaustion. Recognizing this pattern helps researchers and clinicians assess stress and trauma responses, distinguish adaptive caution from excessive threat perception, and guide interventions that support emotional regulation and a stronger sense of safety.
