Mental Prototype

A mental prototype is a cognitive representation of the most typical features associated with a category, helping people organize knowledge and interpret new information. When encountering an object, person, or situation, the mind compares its perceived features with this stored representation; the greater the similarity, the more readily it is categorized and judged as typical. Prototype-based processing supports rapid decision-making, language comprehension, and social perception, but it can also produce errors, stereotypes, and biased judgments when atypical examples are overlooked. Studying mental prototypes helps psychologists explain how concepts form, how categorization guides behavior, and why people differ in their interpretations of the same experience.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Source: Carmen Black, Matthew Goldenberg, and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions of this...

Concepts and Prototypes

The human nervous system handles vast amounts of information by translating sensory stimuli into neural impulses, which the brain processes, creating thoughts expressed through language or stored as memories. The brain also synthesizes information from emotions and memories, which significantly influence thoughts and behaviors. This intricate process creates a comprehensive mental picture. The brain organizes this information using concepts, which are mental categories grouping linguistic data,...

High Throughput Microfluidic Rapid and Low Cost Prototyping Packaging Methods

2013

In this article we describe different techniques for microfluidic rapid prototyping platforms. The proposed techniques are based on ultraviolet (UV) sensitive and temperature curing epoxies, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based tubing, wire-bonding, and anisotropic adhesive films. The assembling procedures presented are developed for both one-time use devices as well as reusable microfluidic systems.
