Q1: How does X-ray fluorescence differ from traditional fluorescence microscopy?
XRF uses high-energy X-ray photons that expel tightly held electrons from inner shells, whereas traditional fluorescence microscopy uses lower-energy visible light and light-active molecules. X-ray photons are energetic enough to cause inner-shell ionization, producing characteristic fluorescent radiation unique to each element that enables elemental identification and quantification.
Q2: What happens when an X-ray photon collides with an atom in XRF?
A high-energy X-ray photon expels an electron from an inner shell of the atom. An electron from a higher-energy shell then falls into the vacancy, releasing a secondary photon proportional to the energy difference between the two shells. This emitted photon is characteristic of the specific element and forms the basis of elemental identification.
