Q1: What is pH and how does the pH scale work?
pH is the negative logarithm of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where pure water is neutral at pH 7, values below 7 are acidic, and values above 7 are basic. Since the scale is logarithmic, each unit decrease in pH represents a tenfold increase in acidity.
Q2: How does a pH meter measure the acidity or basicity of a solution?
A pH meter uses a hydrogen ion-sensitive electrode that develops an electric potential when immersed in a solution. This potential varies based on the hydrogen ion concentration in the test solution. The meter converts this electrical signal into a pH value, allowing measurement of acidity or basicity in aqueous solutions.

Calibration ensures the pH meter provides accurate readings by using standard buffer solutions with known pH values. Buffers spanning the measurement range are used, typically pH 4, 7, and 10.
